Course summary

Year 12 Content: Aspects of French-speaking society: family, digital world, youth culture, film and music. Artistic culture in the French-speaking world: festivals, art and architecture, travel and tourism around France and its French-speaking colonies or departments. Charity work and helping those who are vulnerable or marginalised. Film: La Haine – a critically acclaimed film set in the suburbs of Paris during the 1990s. The film shows an honest and at times, explosive picture of inner city life for young people. Year 13 Content: Multiculturalism: immigration, integration, racism. Aspects of political life in the French-speaking world: France and the EU, youth and politics, unions, work-related issues, protests and rights. Crime, justice and the law. Literary text: ‘Kiffe kiffe demain’ – an open, frank and humorous account of the daily life and struggles of a teenage Arabic girl living in Paris.

Entry requirements

You will need to be a higher candidate at GCSE French and achieve at least a grade 6.

How you'll be assessed

There are three exam papers: Paper 1 – Listening, reading and writing - Listening and responding to spoken passages. Reading and responding to passages. Translation into English. Paper 2 – Writing – Writing about a novel and film and translating into French. Paper 3 – Speaking card on a topic studied and research project.
