Course summary

Business is a course that helps students gain a better understanding of the real world. You will learn how businesses are run, the problems that they experience, and how these problems can be lessened. The first year is all about understanding types of businesses and the key functional areas within them: marketing, operations, finance & human resources. Topics are: Theme 1 - Marketing and people: Meeting customer needs, the market, Marketing mix and strategy, Managing people, Entrepreneurs and leaders. Theme 2 - Managing business activities: Raising finance, Financial Planning, Managing finance, Resource management, External influences. The second year looks more at overall business strategy. It builds upon knowledge gained in the first year to consider wider business such as ethics and globalisation. Topics are: Theme 3 - Business decisions and strategy: Business objectives and strategy, Business growth, Decision-making techniques, Influences on business decisions, Assessing competitiveness, and Managing change. Theme 4 - Global business: Globalisation, Global markets and business expansion, Global Marketing, Global industries and companies (multi-national corporations).

Entry requirements

Two GCSE subjects at Grade 6 and four GCSE subjects at Grade 5 grades. Grade 5 in GCSE Business Studies (if taken at GCSE level) or a Level 2 Distinction in BTEC Enterprise and Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics and English Language. Studying Business Studies at GCSE is not required to gain entry to the course.

How you'll be assessed

There are 3 papers - all 2 hours long. 2 are worth 35% (ea) of the A-level & the final paper is worth 30%. Paper 1 is based on questions drawn from themes 1 & 4. Paper 2 is based on questions drawn from themes 2 & 3. Paper 3 is based on questions drawn from all themes & 2 data response questions broken down into several parts, each including 1 extended open-response question. This paper has a pre-released context to enable students to investigate an industry or market in which businesses operate.
