Course summary

This course is taught over 2 years and with specialist teachers for each topic. Examinations are undertaken at the end of the course with a Programming Project completed across the course. Component 01: Computer Systems: In this unit, we look at the internal workings of the computer, data exchange, software development, data types, and legal and ethical issues. Component 02: Algorithms and programming: This unit looks at computational thinking (thinking abstractly, thinking ahead, thinking procedurally, etc.), problem-solving, and programming. We look at how computers and programs can be used to solve problems and how we create algorithms to describe and solve problems. Component 03: Programming project: This unit is a practical programming project. Students are required to apply the principles of computational thinking to a real-world problem of their choosing. They will analyze, design, develop, test, evaluate, and document a program written in a suitable programming language.

Entry requirements

Entrance into Sixth Form is based upon achieving an average point score of 4 in your best five subjects. Where a student has studied GCSE or BTEC in a subject they would like to study in Sixth Form, it is recommended that a Grade 5 (equivalent) or above is achieved.

Component 01: Worth 40%. Assessed by a 2.5-hour written exam. Component 02: Worth 40%. Assessed by a 2.5-hour written exam. Component 03: Coursework. Worth 20%
