Course summary

Unit 1 Students will learn basic principles of science in a theory based examination unit. The unit consists of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The Biology consists of topics like cells, the heart, the nervous system and cell division. The Chemistry consists of topics like bonding, quantitative chemistry, properties of elements and the reactivity of metals. The physics consists of topics like diffraction gratings, waves in communication, waves in music and EM waves. Unit 2 Students will complete four written assignments containing equipment lists, methods, results, conclusions, evaluations and references. Students will carry out titrations, colorimetry, and calibration of equipment, draw cooling curves, measuring latent heat, chromatography of plant pigments and chromatography of amino acids. Unit 3 Students will study five topics; enzymes in action, diffusion of molecules, plants and their environment, energy content of fuels and electrical circuits. Each topic consists of practical skills where students will perform practical's and then use their skills to draw conclusions, evaluate methods and carry out complex statistics. At the end of the unit the examination board announces which practical topic students will be assessed on. Option Unit The Science department will select which unit the students will study. This is a research unit where students are given an assignment brief and asked to produce three written assignments about the chosen area of interest. Applied Science is for students who wish to study Science at degree level and can lead to careers in pharmacy, radiology, paramedics, engineering, teaching, nursing, research, construction, skilled trades and many more.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to join the course will need to have achieved at least a grade 4-4 in combined Science at GCSE, or a grade 4 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics in triple Science. In addition students will need to have achieved a grade 4 in Mathematics and a grade 4 in English.
