Using an extract from a performance text as a stimulus, you will devise an original piece of theatre. You will learn how to search for meaning within a text, and how you can enhance meaning through performance and design elements. You will practically explore another performance text in light of a theatre practitioner, and from the perspective of a theatre director developing an interpretation for a 21st-century audience. You will explore the evaluation of live theatre; experiencing the work of other theatre makers. You will rehearse and perform an extract, and a monologue/duologue, from two different performance texts.
Students must achieve at least a grade 5 in Drama if studied at GCSE and at least a grade 5 in GCSE English language or literature.
Component 1: Devising: In groups you will develop and perform an original piece of theatre using an extract from Berkoff’s play Metamorphosis as a stimulus. You will complete a 3000-word portfolio as evidence of your research and of your rehearsal process. Component 2: Text in Performance: Working in a group you will rehearse and perform an extract from a performance text. You will choose a monologue/duologue from a different performance text, and perform both for a visiting examiner. Component 3: Theatre Makers in Practice You will sit a 2 hour 30 minute exam comprising a live theatre evaluation, two questions from Laura Wade’s Colder than Here; as a performer and as a designer, and one question on your director’s concept of Woyzeck by Georg Buchner, in light of theatre practitioner, Bertolt Brecht.
