Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous, and practical subject. This specification encourages you to use creativity and imagination when applying iterative design processes to develop and modify designs, and to design and make prototypes that solve real-world problems, considering your own and others' needs, wants, aspirations, and values. Component 1 Design and Technology in the 21st Century: Single written examination in the following endorsed area: product design. The examination includes a mix of structured and extended writing questions assessing learners’ knowledge and understanding of technical principles; designing and making principles and product design, along with their ability to analyze and evaluate design decisions and wider issues in design and technology. Component 2 Design and Make Task: A sustained design and make project, based on a brief developed by the candidate, assessing the candidate's ability to: identify, investigate, and outline design possibilities; design and make prototypes; analyze and evaluate design decisions and wider issues in design and technology. The design and making project will be based on the same endorsed area as the written examination.
Two GCSE subjects at Grade 6 and four GCSE subjects at Grade 5 grades. Grade 5 in a GCSE Technology or Level 2 in Engineering.
Component 1 - Written Paper - 3 hours. 50% of qualification. Externally assessed. Component 2 - Internally assessed and moderated by WJEC visiting moderator. 80 hours. 50% of qualification.
