A Level in Physical Education develops knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to physical education. Students gain understanding of the scientific and socio-cultural factors that underpin physical activity, and demonstrate their ability as either performer or coach. CAREER PATHWAYS: Traditional pathways include performing, coaching, instructing, organizing, officiating and sports medicine. There are also many industries associated with the sport and leisure sector including sport & recreation and health & fitness. This along with a diverse range of vocational options available including: apprenticeships, diplomas, foundation degrees and NVQs.
students must achieve 4 GCSE grades 9-6 and 7 GCSE grades 9-4 (Maths and English grade 5) Students must achieve a GCSE grade 6 in Science or a grade 6 in PE. A merit in BTEC Sport is also acceptable. Students should have a genuine interest in PE in both the practical and theoretical elements and participate in sport for a club outside of school. As part of the course students are expected to assist with lower school clubs/fixtures.
Paper 1 Physiological factors affecting performance: 2 hours/30% of the overall grade Paper 2 Psychological factors affecting performance: 1 hour/20% of the overall grade Paper 3 Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport: 1 hour/20% of the overall grade Performance in physical education (non-exam assessment): written coursework and practical assessment in one sport, 30% of the overall grade
