Through the study of novels, poetry and plays, students become critical readers and writers, able to analyze and evaluate the written word, refining the skill of argument and debate, while also undertaking independent research, all essential skills for many future careers and skills that benefit study in other subjects. CAREER PATHWAYS: Literature is a facilitating subject, developing a wealth of transferable skills perfect for an array of potential careers. From publishing, editing and working in the media, to roles in management, public relations, marketing and advertising - roles where language, communication and understanding are paramount. Equally, it is a natural stepping stone to the study of the law, roles in government, careers in finance and event management.
Students must achieve 4 GCSE grades 9-6 and 7 GCSE grades 9-4 (Maths and English grade 5) You need to achieve at least a grade 6 in either GCSE English Literature or GCSE English Language
Paper 1: Aspects of tragedy - a written examination, worth 40%, at the end of Year 13 Paper 2: Elements of political and social protest writing - a written examination, worth 40%, at the end of Year 13 Non-exam assessment: Theory and independence, 20% of the qualification, made up of two written pieces
