The Certificate in Applied Science is also a good complementary subject for a range of other course on offer in the Sixth Form such as PE, Health & Social Care and pure science A Levels. Applied Science is about scientists and how they work. Science surrounds us in the technological world in which we live. You will build up your scientific knowledge and skills to learn about the uses of science to the benefit of all – covering aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This new qualification is a BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Applied Science, equivalent to half an A Level. It can be followed by further study in Year 13 to become an Extended Certificate, equivalent to a full A Level. Both qualifications carry the A Level equivalent number of UCAS points. It is suited to a range of careers including nursing, biomedical science, forensic science and sports science.
You are expected to have a genuine interest in the subject and a GCSE grade 5 is a minimum requirement to ensure that the demands that this course will impose can be met. You need to be aware that attendance at teaching sessions is mandatory in order to cover the knowledge and significant coursework elements required in this syllabus.
