Course summary

Law is the bedrock of the modern world. Like the air, it is invisible and yet is all around us. From the air we breathe, to the clothes we wear, the food we eat and even controlling our behavior and morality, Law impacts it all. Studying A-Level Law gives students a rare and unique glimpse into this vast hidden world and they will take away knowledge that is not only insightful but practical. There is no expectation for students to have any prior knowledge of the subject as it will be new to the majority of students. As such students have access to taught weekly enrichment sessions to help support them in their learning. Students will have the opportunity to develop a vast variety of key transferable skills such as analysis, problem solving and evaluative skills, in addition to specific legal skills including negotiation, commercial awareness and advocacy through activities like mock courts. In GCE Law, students will receive five hours of taught sessions per week. It is expected that students spend an equal amount of time independently studying and revision. This will be supported through the use of weekly homework.

Entry requirements

You must have achieved 5 passes including mathematics and English, where a pass is defined as GCSE 9-4 and pass or better at level 2 BTEC.

How you'll be assessed

At the end of the two years of study, students sit three exams, all of which are two hours long covering the three broad areas of law that we will have examined; criminal law, tort law, and human rights law. Each question will assess students on their ability to identify and explain the relevant law before applying that knowledge to a scenario to come to a conclusion. For example, has a defendant committed everything required to prove murder or is there any defenses that could be used? This format forms the basis for Praising Stars assessments throughout the course to practice these essential skills.
