Biology is the study of living organisms; the name derives from the Greek words ‘bio’ (life) and ‘logos’ (studies). Biologists link chemistry and physics to explain how all forms of life exist. There are many specialist fields focused on the morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin, and distribution of organisms. Biology is often studied along with other science-based subjects such as chemistry, physics, maths, psychology, and computer science. However, an understanding of biology is vital to many other fields and can be useful in everyday life. Biology also requires methodical and analytical skills which is a focus of IB during lab sessions and through completing the IA. YEAR 12 1) Basic biochemistry and cell structure 2) Nucleotide structure and function, and transport in cells. Plant Biology 3) Detailed metabolism reactions in plants and animals. Cell division. Nucleic acids. 4) Genetics and evolution 5) Ecology studies and IA preparation 6) Evolution, classification, speciation, and IA preparation. Possible field trip re IA YEAR 13 1) Human physiology nutrition, digestion, and liver function IA first draft 2) The circulatory system & gas exchange, Hormones & metabolism. IA final draft 3) Defence against disease. The nervous system & movement. Reproduction & homeostasis. 4) Revision and mock exams 5) IB Exams You will need to spend about 3-4 hours per week on independent study. This will involve set homework tasks as well as reading assignments and consolidating your knowledge. Most lessons will start with a recap of previous topics, with fundamental concepts regularly revisited throughout the course. Regular topic tests and extended answer questions.
