A Level Art and Design is a two year course completed by the end of Year 13. A Level Art is a largely practical course which builds upon skills gained at GCSE and develops the students’ ability to draw and paint through use of a variety of media and techniques. Students will study the history of art and develop their research and investigative skills. During the first year of the course students are required to complete a body of practical work, in which they explore a variety of materials and techniques. In the second year students continue practical work and they also write an accompanying personal study of up to 3000 words. They complete the course with a 15 hour examination. The A Level course consists of two areas of study: a portfolio and an end-of-course examination. The portfolio consists of the students’ own practical work in drawing and painting. They should demonstrate an ability to understand and use line, tone, texture, color and form in an organized way and use a wide range of materials, producing at least two coursework projects for submission at the end of each year. Students will also link their practical work to the work of other artists through historical study.
A Level Art is designed to build upon skills gained at GCSE for students who have achieved at least a Grade 4 or above Students will need to achieve at least five GCSE’s at Grade 4 or above, including English and Maths.
Work is assessed by the course tutor throughout the two years, with regular reports on progress. At the end of the course the examination, coursework and written studies are marked and then externally moderated before a grade is awarded.
