Course summary

A Level Photography is a two-year course. A Level Photography is a largely practical course building up skills through a variety of workshops held throughout the year. Students will study the history of photography; techniques used and will develop their research and investigative skills. During the first year of the course, students are required to complete a body of practical work, in which they will explore a variety of materials, photographic techniques and a 10-hour terminal examination. In the second year students, continue practical work; focusing on a personal study that must contain a minimum of 1000 words. They will also complete an externally set assignment enabling pupils to develop their response over a preparatory study time, accompanied with a 15-hour examination. The A-level course consists of two areas of study:- a portfolio and an end-of-course examination. The portfolio consists of the students’ own practical work in photography and editing. They should demonstrate an ability to understand and use photographic elements alongside professional editing software, producing at least two coursework projects for submission at the end of each year. Students will also link their practical work to the work of other artists and through historical and contemporary study.

Entry requirements

Students will need to achieve at least five GCSE’s at Grade 4 or above, including English and Maths.

How you'll be assessed

Work is assessed by the course tutor throughout the two years, with regular reports on progress. At the end of the course examination, coursework and written studies are marked and then externally moderated before a grade is awarded.
