Course summary

If you are interested in news, advertising, films, television and internet, Media Studies should interest you. There is a strong moral and ethical aspect to Media Studies and you are encouraged to think differently: to see the world in different ways. We are an inclusive department and Media Studies is available to all students, with no previous experience of the subject needed. However, a Grade 4 in GCSE English Language and Literature is needed as a minimum and an interest in the world around you is strongly recommended. During both years of the course students will be studying the role of the media in contemporary culture and society, including local, national and global political factors. They will explore how the impact of media industries are influenced by cultural, historical and political contexts. Students will do this by looking at a range of media texts that could be tested within the examination including set texts such as: Beyoncs Formation Sam Fenders Seventeen Going Under Black Panther The Assassins Creed Franchise Media in the Online Age And many more! Furthermore, students will complete a developed piece of coursework over the two years where they will have to create their own media platform to include a magazine, website, advertisements and social media presence. This will give students a real-world insight into how the Media industry works. Academic and practical skills developed during Media Studies are transferable to many other curriculum subjects, Higher Education courses and many career areas.
