Course summary

The BTEC qualifications in this specification have been developed in the science sector to: - give learners the opportunity to acquire technical and employability skills, knowledge and understanding. - give full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the science sector or to progress to vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals in Applied Biology, Applied Chemistry or health-related or other science-related qualifications. - give learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life. Students attaining a Pass overall is equivalent to grade E, Merit to grade B and Distinction to a grade A at A level. The course is delivered in laboratories where a range of practical activities take place and is taught by a subject specialist teacher.

Entry requirements

5 A* - C GCSE or Equivalent including English and Maths, or continuing study of GCSE English and Maths in addition to other courses if not achieved. This course has additional requirements: A BTEC Science at a Merit or greater or a core or additional science GCSE at grade C or greater.

How you'll be assessed

• Mandatory Unit 1 – Fundamentals of Science - Be able to use the necessary skills to measure quantities for chemical reactions - Be able to use the - correct equipment to identify structures and functions in different types of cells - Be able to investigate different types of energy and their transfers - Be able to communicate scientific information. - Portfolio work graded to Pass, Merit or Distinction o Submitted end of year 12 • Mandatory Unit 2 – Working in the Science Industry - Know how procedures are followed and communicated in the scientific workplace - Be able to design a scientific laboratory Know about laboratory information management systems - Be able to demonstrate safe working practices in the scientific workplace. - Portfolio work graded to Pass, Merit or Distinction - Submitted end of year 12 • Mandatory Unit 3 – Scientific Practical Techniques - Be able to use analytical techniques - Be able to use scientific techniques to separate and assess purity of substances - Be able to use instruments/sensors for scientific investigations. - Portfolio work graded to Pass, Merit or Distinction - Submitted end of year 12. Three other units are then submitted during year 13. These units are from a selection of optional units and will be decided on nearer the time based on resources.
