The BTEC National in Applied Science is a broad-based award designed to provide a general vocational introduction to science, giving students the skills they need to either move on to higher education or go straight into employment. BTEC qualifications can be taken as well as or in place of, A Levels. The BTEC National in Applied Science is being offered as a diploma which is equivalent to two A Levels. In the diploma a total of four units will be completed, three mandatory and one optional unit
Students should achieve a grade of 5-5 in Combined Science.
External tasks are made up of both examinations and set tasks: • Examinations – students take the same assessment at the same time. • Set tasks – students take the assessment during a defined window and demonstrate understanding through the completion of a vocational task. Internal tasks are more coursework-based. Students could be given the opportunity to: • Write up the findings of their research. • Use case studies to explore complex or unfamiliar situations. • Demonstrate practical and communication skills using appropriate presentations.
