Course summary

Sociology looks at human behaviour in a range of societal situations and tries to understand it. We look beneath the obvious, exploring different perspectives and asking important questions. What is a family, and how does it function? Why do people experience violence and abuse, and what happens when they do? How do our society, state and individual identities influence the way we live? A variety of learning strategies from small group work/team work and presentations to whole class discussions, role play, stimulus work research and games. • Exploring research methods such as experimentation, observation, questionnaires and interviews, learning how they operate as well as their advantages and disadvantages. • Study of core sociological concepts, learning about individual identity, the role of the family, the influences of society and the state as well as legal and ethical aspects.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs, including English and maths, grade 5/C or above.

How you'll be assessed

This course is assessed by external examinations. AS Level: Two exams, 1 hr 30 mins each A Level: Three exams, 2 hrs each
