Year 1: You will spend the year developing key skills in a range of media (painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media and digital work). You will then develop your preferred media into small focused projects. You will learn how to make relevant connections to the work of others. Essentially this is the development year in preparation for the A Level in year 2. Year 2: Component 1: Personal investigation This is a practical investigation supported by written material. The investigation will be a coherent, indepth study developing a sustained investigation from an initial starting point to a final realisation. The written element is a structured response of between 1000 and 3000 words. Component 2: Externally set assignment You will choose one of the exam board’s externally set questions and develop this into a body of work. Following the preparatory period you will complete a fifteen hour exam. You will develop one or more of the following: • Drawing and painting • Mixed-media, including collage and assemblage • Sculpture • Ceramics • Installation • Printmaking • Moving image and photography.
To study A Level at The South Wolds Academy and Sixth Form you must achieve at least six GCSE passes, two at Grade 6 or above and four at Grade 5 or above At least a Grade 6 in GCSE Art is desirable.
Assessment is marked against AQA’s marking criteria. Portfolio is 60% and the externally set assignment 40% of your final grade.
