Course summary

Even closer business links between Britain and the rest of the world are creating more opportunities for those with language skills. At university, languages can be studied as a single or joint honors, and many prestigious offer this. In addition, languages can also be combined with many other subjects such as accountancy, law, business, marketing, engineering, linguistics, media, and tourism. The options are endless as are the possibilities for future employment. Studying a language at A level also helps to develop your verbal and written communication skills to a high level and promotes an understanding of your own language. Students have to study and develop opinions on a wide range of different topic areas. This knowledge and skills can be applied to a range of other subjects. The course is usually taught by two teachers and you will have 5 hours a week. In addition to this, you would be expected to spend another five hours of independent study learning vocabulary, developing your listening and reading skills through watching films and television and reading newspapers and magazine articles in French. You will study a film in Y12 and then a book in Y13. For the speaking assessment, you are able to choose your own topic to research and you will present and discuss your findings in the speaking assessment at the end of year 13.

Entry requirements

You must have achieved 5 passes including mathematics and English, where a pass is defined as GCSE 9-4 and pass or better at level 2 BTEC. A GCSE grade 6 and above in French

How you'll be assessed

AO1: Understand and respond: in speech to spoken language including face-to-face interaction in writing to spoken language drawn from a variety of sources. AO2: Understand and respond: in speech to written language drawn from a variety of sources in writing to written language drawn from a variety of sources. AO3: Manipulate the language accurately, in spoken and written forms, using a range of lexis and structure. AO4: Show knowledge and understanding of, and respond critically to, different aspects of the culture and society of countries/communities where the language is spoken. The course is assessed at the end of Y13 and you will be assessed in the four skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. Paper 1 - Listening, reading and Writing 2 hours 30 Paper 2 - Writing (about a film and book) 2 hours Paper 3 - Speaking assessment 20 minutes. AS and A2 past papers are used throughout the course to assess progress at six points in the year as part of the Praising Stars assessment..
