Course summary

If you are a creative individual who is passionate about art, is self-driven, and wants a career in the arts, then this is the course for you. Unit 1 Portfolio of Work - Personal Investigation. Students are required to conduct a practical investigation into an idea, issue, concept, or theme, supported by written material. The focus of the investigation must be identified independently by the student & must lead to a finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes. Unit 2 Externally Set Assignment. Students select a question from an exam paper. Preparatory work should be presented in a suitable format, such as mounted sheets, design sheets, sketchbooks, workbooks, journals, models & maquettes. Students will be introduced to a variety of art experiences in a range of media, processes, and techniques, and develop personal ideas through sustained focused investigations both visually and contextually. Following completing this course, you could go onto a higher level course, or apprenticeship or have a career as a graphic designer, architect, illustrator, painting restorer, fashion designer, art director, or fine artist.

Entry requirements

Two GCSE subjects at Grade 6 and four GCSE subjects at Grade 5 grades. Grade 5 in GCSE Art.

How you'll be assessed

Internally assessed by the Art Department and externally moderated by AQA. Unit 1 Portfolio of Work - Personal Investigation. No time limit. 96 marks, 60% of A-level. Unit 2 Externally Set Assignment. Preparatory period + 15 hours of supervised time. 96 marks, 40% of A-level.
