Course summary

Sociology is the study of society. This means that we try to answer questions about the world around us. For example. • Why is the divorce rate going up? • Why do girls get better GCSE results than boys do? • Why do people commit crime? • Do films and TV make us violent? We also study how to research in sociology, through questionnaires, interviews and observations, for example. We will carry out the different research methods both inside and outside the classroom. Sociology is a challenging, thought provoking and stimulating subject, involving varying methods of learning, from debates and discussions to role-play and presentations. Sociology is the perfect partner to health and social care, psychology, history, English, geography, religious studies, amongst others! The topics you are likely to cover are: • Families and households • Education • Research methods • Crime and deviance • Theory and methods • Beliefs in society
