Course summary

A level biology is an excellent way to prepare for further education in sciences, medicine, dentistry, engineering and vocational qualifications such as nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy and much more. This two-year course covers topics ranging from genetics and human physiology to conservation and biodiversity, with plenty of opportunities to experience hands-on practical activities. Paper 1 – Biological Processes – 37% of A level Paper 2 – Biological Diversity – 37% of A level Paper 3 – Unified Biology – 26% of A level

Entry requirements

You should have at least 5 GCSEs at Grade 5 or above including Maths and English. You should also have sat a higher science paper and achieved a grade 6 or above in Biology or a grade 66 or above in combined science. This is a level 3 course, which demands a high level of literacy, numeracy, data skills, problem solving and organisational skills.

How you'll be assessed

Examinations at the end of year two. Throughout the course, there will also be an internally assessed review of practical skills, examining specific experiments as well as investigation and research skills. On successful completion you will be awarded with a practical endorsement.
