Course summary

Chemistry helps us to develop a deeper understanding of the properties of materials, how they interact, and how to make new materials. To be a successful chemist you should have a clear logical mind with very good problem-solving abilities. Chemistry is an essential subject for many degree courses such as Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, and Dentistry.

Entry requirements

Grade 7 or above (or equivalent), at GCSE Chemistry, Trilogy Science or Synergy Science and GCSE Mathematics. Many students find it advantageous also to study A level Mathematics, but this is not essential.

How you'll be assessed

The A level course is assessed by three exams which take place at the end of the upper sixth. Paper 1 (2 hours, 105 marks): inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and relevant practical skills. A mixture of short and long answer questions. Paper 2 (2 hours, 105 marks): organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and relevant practical skills. A mixture of short and long answer questions. Paper 3 (2 hours, 90 marks): 40 marks on practical techniques and data analysis, 20 marks testing across the specification, 30 marks on multiple-choice questions
