Course summary

This is a brand new exciting course providing the opportunity to study key aspects of British and world History from the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries. Two students each year also have the opportunity to participate in The Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Programme where they meet Holocaust survivors and visit Auschwitz in Poland.

Entry requirements

5 A* - C GCSE or Equivalent including English and Maths, or continuing study of GCSE English and Maths in addition to other courses if not achieved. This course has additional requirements: A GCSE at grade B or greater in History.

How you'll be assessed

• Breath Study: Challenge and Transformation: Britain 1851 - 1964: Students examine how Britain consolidated its position as economic world leader and the reforms and issues that presented themselves as modern Britain was made. The growth of democracy, attempts to solve the ‘Irish Question’, the growth of the British Empire as well as Britain’s dealing with the rest of the world are all key topics that are covered. Students will investigate the impact of the birth of the NHS, the beginnings of television and the key issues surrounding mass immigration after the Second World War. External examination is taken at the end of the two years and is worth 40% of the A Level. • Depth Study: Italy and Fascism 1900 – 1945: Students examine in detail the factors which brought Mussolini to power, the changes he made in Italy and the impact of Fascism on the wider world. External assessment is taken at the end of the two years and is worth 40% of the A level. • Historical Investigation: Coursework: How do wars begin? 1760 to 1941: Students study in detail the major causes of the First and Second World War and then independently investigate if there are any similarities or patterns with other European wars in the 18th and 19th Century. Students have the freedom to choose their own title for their study. This is a 3500 word coursework assignment to be completed over the course of a year. It is marked internally and worth 20% of the A Level.
