Biology involves the study of a wide range of exciting topics, ranging from the way the body works to the study of ecosystems and from microorganisms to mammoths. The course is designed to encourage students to develop an enthusiasm for biology, learn practical skills alongside an understanding of concepts and principles and build a solid foundation of knowledge and skills for studying biology in Higher Education. The course is delivered in laboratories where a range of practical activities take place and is taught by two subject specialist teachers. As part of the course students have entered national competitions and also visited Chester Zoo to enhance their learning.
5 A* - C GCSE or Equivalent including English and Maths This course has additional requirements: A GCSE at grade B or greater in Biology and another in either Chemistry or Physics. A grade B or greater in both Core and Additional Science would be considered.
Paper 1: Any content from topics 1–4, including relevant practical skills Written exam: 2 hours 91 marks 35% of A-level Questions 76 marks: a mixture of short and long answer questions 15 marks: extended response questions Paper 2: Any content from topics 5–8, including relevant practical skills Written exam: 2 hours 91 marks 35% of A-level Questions 76 marks: a mixture of short and long answer questions 15 marks: comprehension question Paper 3: Any content from topics 1–8, including relevant practical skills Written exam: 2 hours 78 marks 30% of A-level Questions 38 marks: structured questions, including practical techniques 15 marks: critical analysis of given experimental data 25 marks: one essay from a choice of two titles
