At university languages can be studied as a single or joint honours and many prestigious offer this. In addition, languages can also be combined with many other subjects such as accountancy, law, business, marketing, engineering, linguistics, media, tourism. The options are endless as are the possibilities for future employment. Studying a language at A level also helps to develop your verbal and written communications skills to a high level and promotes an understanding of your own language. Students have to study and develop opinions on a wide range of different topic areas. This knowledge and skills can be applied to a range of other subjects.
You must have achieved 5 passes including mathematics and English, where a pass is defined as GCSE 9-4 and pass or better at level 2 BTEC. Students must also have achieved a Grade 6 in Spanish at GCSE.
AO1: Understand and respond: • In speech-to-spoken language including face-to-face interaction • In writing to spoken language drawn from a variety of sources. AO2: Understand and respond: • In speech-to-written language drawn from a variety of sources • In writing to written language drawn from a variety of sources. AO3: Manipulate the language accurately, in spoken and written forms, using a range of lexis and structure. AO4: Show knowledge and understanding of, and respond critically to, different aspects of the culture and society of countries/communities where the language is spoken. The course is assessed at the end of Y13 and you will be assessed in the four skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. ● Paper 1 - Listening, reading, and Writing 2 hours 30 ● Paper 2 - Writing (about a film and book) 2 hours ● Paper 3 - Speaking assessment 20 minutes. AS and A2 past papers are used throughout the course to assess progress.
