Course summary

Sociology is the study of society and which groups make up society. It allows us to study social processes and ultimately improve the world around us with policies and a research-based understanding. Sociologists explore issues such as crime and deviance, social stratification, culture, social mobility, and changing dynamics within families.

Entry requirements

You must have achieved 5 passes including mathematics and English, where a pass is defined as GCSE 9-4 and pass or better at level 2 BTEC.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment Objective 1 - Knowledge and Understanding Assessment Objective 2 - Application Assessment Objective 3 - Analysis and Evaluation. Students sit three, two-hour exams, each worth 80 marks, at the end of the two-year course: Paper 1 - Education and Research Methods Paper 2 - Family and Households and Beliefs in Society Paper 3 - Crime and Deviance, Methods and Theories. Praising Stars cycles will be used to assess and monitor progress and to identify appropriate interventions to maximize student outcomes from the course.
