Why study core maths? There are subjects that have a surprisingly high mathematical content; these subjects include geography, history, the social sciences and, indeed, science itself. Core maths is a fantastic way of supporting these subjects and deepening your understanding of why we do what we do when it comes to displaying and analysing data. The course is rooted in the real world and allied to data analysis; we also study personal finance and how to manage money in everyday life. What will you study? In Year 12 you will study the different types of data and how it is collected and represented. We will look at percentages and how these are used in personal finance. We will also consider how numeric values can be used to assess a measure of location and how we can use techniques such as Pythagoras’ Theorem and trigonometry in real life contexts In Year 13 we continue our work on how data can be used to draw informative and useful conclusions. We will look at what taxation and National Insurance are used for and how this information is displayed on a payslip. You will then study one of three optional areas: further statistical techniques, critical path analysis or graphical techniques.
APS of 4.5+. Minimum Grade 4+ GCSE Maths Skills and attributes: Successful students need confidence when dealing with the four strands in mathematics; number, algebra, geometry and data. Successful students tend to have intellectual curiosity, a logical and methodical approach and are open to independant exploration of new concepts.
The course is linear and there is no coursework element. Assessment is undertaken during the Year 13 exam series.
