Course summary

Do you love maths? Do you enjoy a challenge? Do you enjoy finding a final answer to a problem? Do you enjoy investigating? Then Maths A level is for you A variety of topics are studied building on the work covered at GCSE. These topic areas consist of Pure Mathematics (algebra, trigonometry etc), Mechanics (statics and dynamics) and Statistics (probability and data handling). Two thirds of the course will be Pure maths, one-sixth will be mechanics and one-sixth will be Statistics. You will learn new material and the over-arching themes must then be applied along with associated mathematical thinking and understanding. In essence, you will learn how to apply mathematics to new situations. Homework is set after every lesson to consolidate the work covered in school; approximately one hour of homework is set after every lesson. It is imperative that students keep up to date with all homework set. There will be three papers to assess you at the end of year 13 (each one is 2 hours) of Pure maths and then pure maths with each of the applied topics.

Entry requirements

- Students must have achieved a grade 7 or above at maths GCSE. The Induction homework is a compulsory pre- requisite for the course Dedication and perseverance Logical thinking and problem solving skills Time management and the ability to work very hard - 5 GCSEs graded from 9 to 4, where 3 of those GCSEs are graded at a grade 5 or above.
