Course summary

Students completing a BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design will be aiming to go on to employment in the creative arts industry, often via the stepping stone of higher education. The course offers students the opportunity to explore a wide range of specialisms in a vocational context. Students are required to work independently in response to a set brief and scenario. Units are a combination of written and practical outcomes. Students have the opportunity to work in a wide range of formats and platforms. They will explore a range of specialist skills that will enable them to identify future career pathways. The course consists of 8 vocational units that will be completed over 2 years. Five of these units are internally assessed and three are externally assessed. Year 12 1) Unit 4: Materials, Techniques, and Processes in Art and Design Title: Man-Manipulated Landscapes 2) Externally Set Task Unit 2: Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design Written Exam 3) Externally Set Task Unit 1: Visual Recording and Communication Practical Exam with Written Element 4) Externally Set Task Unit 1: Visual Recording and Communication Practical Exam with Written Element 5) Unit 16: 3D Craft Materials, Techniques and Processes Title: Curiosities of Craft (Part1) 6) Unit 16: 3D Craft Materials, Techniques and Processes Title: Design Craft Souvenirs (Part 2) Year 13 1) Unit 10: Graphics Materials, Techniques, and Processes Title: The Art of Film Poster 2) Unit 3: The Creative Process Title: Evolution 3) Unit 5: Developing an Art and Design Portfolio Title: Portfolio Interview 4) Externally Set Task Unit 7: Developing and Realising Creative Intentions Practical Exam 5) Unit 5: Developing an Art and Design Portfolio Continued Title: Portfolio Interview What to Expect • Independent learning opportunities and working to deadlines. • Practical and written exams. • Working with a wide range of media, skills, and techniques. • Creative arts industry-themed projects. Entry requirements

Students who intend to study the International Baccalaureate Careers Programme will be required to achieves five GCSEs at 5 or above including English and Maths. GCSE Art/3D Design and English at grade 5 or above

How you'll be assessed

Units are assessed using a grading scale of Distinction (D), Merit (M), Pass (P), Near Pass (N), and Unclassified (U). The grade of Near Pass is used for externally assessed units only.
