Course summary

A level of Further Mathematics is fun and rewarding. It broadens your mathematical skills and promotes deeper mathematical thinking. You will be introduced to interesting new areas of pure mathematics such as complex numbers and apply mathematics in a wider range of contexts. Studying A level Further Mathematics is also likely to improve your grade in A level Mathematics. The extra time, additional practice, further consolidation, and development of techniques beyond A-level Mathematics provide enrichment promoting the attainment of higher grades in both A levels. Mathematics and Further Mathematics are versatile qualifications, well-respected by employers, and are both "facilitating" subjects for entry to higher education. Having A level Further Mathematics on your university application is a way to make it stand out. It is highly sought after by universities, especially as part of an application to higher education in the STEM subjects as the additional content helps ensure a successful progression to university.

Entry requirements

Achieve at least a Grade 4 in Mathematics and English Language or English Literature in addition to 4 further GCSEs at Grades 9 – 4. Mathematics GCSE grade 8 or above. There will be an entry assessment in the first week of September covering the Summer work set. This will test your understanding of basic techniques to be used and applied throughout the A-level course. The purposes of the assessment are to clarify any areas that need further development to ensure your suitability for the course and promote/support ease of access.

How you'll be assessed

Further Mathematics is assessed over four 90-minute papers, each comprising 75 marks and worth 25% of the qualification. There are several examination routes permitted for A Level Further Mathematics, providing flexibility of study. Each of these routes comprises the mandatory Paper 1 and Paper 2 and a choice of four options for Paper 3 and seven options for Paper 4. Students choose one option for each paper. Options available in Statistics, Mechanics, or Decision Mathematics. The booklet 'Mathematical Formulae and Statistical Tables' will be provided for use in the assessment. Calculators will be required for each paper. * Awaiting accreditation from OFQUAL for the finalized examination code.
