Course summary

Studying A-level Biology at university gives you all sorts of exciting career options, including Doctor, clinical molecular geneticist, nature conservation officer, pharmacologist, research scientist, vet, secondary school teacher, marine biologist, and dentist. Units Studied - Year 12 • Biological molecules – Including the fundamental building blocks of living organisms; carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. • Cells – Including cell structure, transport across cell membranes, cell recognition, and the immune system. • Organisms exchange substances with their environment – including a gaseous exchange in mammals, insects, and fish, single and double circulatory systems in animals, and transport in plants. • Genetic information, variation, and relationships between organisms – including DNA, genes, and protein sy. Units Studied - Year 13 • Energy transfers in and between organisms – including how energy is transferred through an ecosystem, photosynthesis, and respiration. • Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments – including how organisms respond to their environments, how nerves and muscles work, and homeostasis. • Genetics, populations, evolution, and ecosystems – including how populations change within an ecosystem. • The control of gene expression – including genetic modification of organisms.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 grades at level 9-4 at GCSE level and/or BTEC Level 2 Pass. Grade 4 or above in English Language and Mathematics. 6-6 in Science and 6 in Maths.

How you'll be assessed

There is no coursework on this course. However, your performance during practicals will be assessed and will be awarded as a pass alongside your examined grade. There are three exams at the end of the two years for A-level, all of which are two hours long. At least 15% of the marks for A-level Biology are based on what you learned in your practicals.
