Unit 1: Dynamic Landscapes and Physical Systems and Sustainability - Tectonic Processes & Hazards; Coastal Landscapes and Change (Year 12) - The Water Cycle & Water Insecurity; The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security (Year 13) Unit 2: Dynamic Places and Human Systems and Geopolitics - Globalisation; Regeneration (Year 12) - Superpowers; Health, Human Rights & Intervention (Year 13) Unit 3: Independent Investigation of a Contemporary Geographical Issue Students will be provided with a resource booklet about a geographical issue based upon the compulsory topics studied within the A Level course (Tectonics, Coasts, Globalisation, and Superpowers). This unit will develop a holistic understanding of Geography as students will be required to think synoptically using knowledge learned across the units focussing on key concepts: Players; Attitudes and actions; Futures and Uncertainties Unit 4: Independent Investigation Coursework Students are required to produce an investigation report of approximately 4000 words. They will be required to work independently by incorporating primary fieldwork data and secondary research. Students will develop skills in analysis and evaluation of large data sets, data presentation techniques as well as writing a literature review and a well-substantiated conclusion. The independent investigation will be internally assessed by the department and externally moderated by Edexcel. Students are required to undertake a minimum of 4 days of residential fieldwork, where they will undertake either a human inquiry in Scarborough or a physical inquiry in Hornsea on the Holderness Coast.

Entry requirements

The standard entry requirement to our Sixth Form is five GCSE grades of 4 or above, including English and Maths. Grade 6 in GCSE Geography and English Language and a Grade 5 in GCSE Maths.

How you'll be assessed

This qualification is linear and will require students to sit 3 examinations at the end of their two-year course. - The three examinations are each two hours and 15 minutes long. - Within the examinations, there is a mixture of questions ranging from 4-24 marks. - Each section will comprise at least one long answer question which will either be worth 12 or 20 marks.
