Studying Theatre studies at A-level gives you the opportunity to be creative whilst developing analytical skills enabling you to be a confident, articulate critical thinker who can work well with others as well as independently. This course takes a holistic approach to Theatre looking at performance, design, and direction as well theoretical exploration of texts. Our teaching methods are practical and we offer the opportunity to experience live theatre as an audience member as well as taking part in it as performers and theatre makers.
You must have achieved 5 passes including mathematics and English, where a pass is defined as GCSE 9-4 and pass or better at level 2 BTEC. Ideally a GCSE or equivalent in Drama or performing arts Students need to have a level 5 or above in English at GCSE to access this course
Component 1: Drama and theatre (written) An open book exam focusing on two areas of theatre: The Study of 1 set text in Year 1 and a further text in Year 2. The analysis and evaluation of a live performance. Component 2: Creating original drama (practical) This unit focuses on the process of creating devised drama and only occurs in the second year of the course. The devised piece must be influence An open book exam focusing on two ad by the work and methodologies of one prescribed practitioner. A working notebook will be kept throughout this unit. Component 3: Making theatre (practical) Students practically explore and interpret three extracts (extracts 1 and 2 in year 1 and the third in year 2) each taken from a different play exploring methodology of a prescribed practitioner. One extract will be performed and assessed at the end of year 1 and 2. Students may contribute as a performer, designer or director.
