Course summary

The overall aim of the course is to provide students with an exciting opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the world around them and reflect on social issues that are often relevant to their own experiences - for example, the composition of families today, inequality in society or the impact of digital communication on relationships. During the course students can acquire knowledge and a critical understanding of contemporary society. They have the opportunity to develop a broad set of key skills, including the ability to analyse and formulate clear, logical arguments with scope for extensive evaluation of theoretical perspectives. Developing strong critical thinking skills and considering issues with a global outlook will be of huge benefit to students in the future. Sociology complements most other subjects - popular combinations are Psychology, Biology, Geography, History and English. It is particularly useful for those considering careers in HR, the media, social work and nursing.
