Course summary

Topic 1 - Applied Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding different body systems and the effects of exercise on them. Newton’s Laws of Motion and how they apply to a sporting context Topic 2 - Exercise Physiology and Applied Movement Analysis: Understanding the importance of diet and nutrition. Fatigue and recovery. How to train, maintain, and improve fitness. How to prevent and rehabilitate from injury. Understanding movement analysis and different types of motion. Topic 3 – Skill acquisition: Understanding the learning theories and how they relate to skill development, and the role of memory systems. Relate knowledge of practice, feedback, and guidance to practical situations. How to generate and evaluate quantitative data. Topic 4 – Sport Psychology: Understanding the role of sport psychology in facilitating optimal performance. The debate of nature vs nurture or the interaction of both. Topic 5 – Sport and society: Understanding the dynamic relationship between sport and society. Consider historical and contemporary events and trends and potential future developments.

Entry requirements

You will need at least a grade 6 in Biology and English. We understand some students have not had the opportunity to study GCSE PE, therefore this is not a requirement for studying A Level PE at Rugby High.

How you'll be assessed

Component 1: Scientific Principles of Physical Education: 2 hours 30 minutes written exam, 40% of the qualification – this will be on topics 1 and 2. Marked out of 140. Component 2: Psychological and Social Principles of Physical Education: 2 hours written exam, 30% of the qualification – this will be on topics 3, 4, and 5. Marked out of 100. Component 3: Practical Performance: Internally assessed, externally moderated, 15 % of the qualification – skills performed as a player in one physical activity or skills performed as a coach in one physical activity. Marked out of 40. Component 4: Performance Analysis and Performance Development Programme: Internally assessed, externally moderated, 15% of the qualification – in the role of player or coach, analyze two components of physical activity and then implement and evaluate a Performance Development Programme. Marked out of 40.
