This course develops knowledge and understanding of biological concepts. There is an emphasis on practical techniques and applying knowledge to broader, real life themes. This course is highly regarded by employers and universities. At Charnwood College, the Biology department consists of a dynamic group of teachers, who offer a supportive and encouraging environment that enables students to achieve their full potential. We use a range of learning styles to deliver the course, including preparing and delivering presentations, hosting debates and conducting practical experiments.
A minimum of 5 GCSEs Grade 4 or higher. Grade 5 in English and Maths and Grade 6 in Biology.
Paper 1 Sections 1- 4 and practical skills Assessed written exam of 2 hours contributing towards 35% of the total A Level. Short and long answer questions – 76 marks Extended response questions - 15 marks Paper 2 Sections 5-8 and practical skills Assessed written exam of 2 hours contributing towards 35% of the total A Level. Short and long answer questions – 76 marks Comprehension questions – 15 marks Paper 3 Sections 1-8 and practical skills Assessed written exam of 2 hours contributing towards 30% of the total A Level. Structured questions including practical techniques – 38 marks Critical analysis of given experimental data – 15 marks Essay from a choice of two questions – 25 marks
