This option is for students who are interested in possible future careers within the health, social care and public services. It offers the opportunity to specialised degrees within medicine, paramedics, health studies, health sciences, psychology, physiotherapy, social work, health service business management and sociology. What makes health and social care an exciting subject is that it helps us to learn more about ourselves and human development throughout the lifespan from birth to old age. You will learn how the mind develops, and how theories have been developed which enable us to understand behaviour and development. In this unit you will be enabled to apply this knowledge in the management of post- traumatic stress disorder and the range of treatment options, settings and practitioners available to the client. You'll develop the professional and personal skills required to work in the care sector, as well as geting an understanding of the importance of delivering, person-centred care and support. You'll explore human anatomy and physiology and understand the principles and values that underpin good quality care services including equality, respecting diversity and promoting inclusive practice. There'll have the chance to focus on psychology or sociology topics, public health, nutrition, infection control or supporting people with specific needs such as dementia or mental health conditions through additional optional units. Through classroom-based lessons including group work, case study, discussion and role play activities as well as individual assignments. You'll have the opportunity to undertake work experience in a health and social care related organisation. There will be visits to and speakers from health and social care organisations.
