Music GCSE Grade 6 / Music Technology NCFE Level 2 Distinction PLUS Grade 6 in an instrument (may include voice) OR Evidence of subject ability if not previously studied (applicant to provide)

How you'll be assessed

Component 1: Performing (9MU0/01) – 30% of the qualification This unit gives students the opportunity to perform as soloists and/or as part of an ensemble. They will rehearse and refine performances on their chosen instrument or voice, developing technical control, expression, and interpretative skills and leading to an eight-minute public performance. Total performance time of 8 minutes Component 2: Composing (9MU0/02) - 30% of the qualification This unit allows students to appreciate the process of creating music, producing two compositions, one to a brief set by Edexcel and one either a free composition or also written to a brief. The format of these briefs will be the same each year but the specific content will vary. Each brief will relate to an audience and/or occasion, and students will then compose in a chosen style from one of the areas of study listed below. Students will be encouraged to explore a range of compositional starting points and to investigate a range of techniques for developing and manipulating ideas. - Two compositions - One free or free choice brief – min 4 min - One brief assessing technique – min 1 min - Together total min of 6 minutes Component 3: Appraising (9MU0/03) - 40% of the qualification The purpose of this component is for students to develop their listening and appraising skills through the study of music across a variety of styles and genres. The content is grouped into the following six areas of study, each of which contains two set works: Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Music for Film, Popular Music and Jazz, Fusions, and New Directions. There will be a two-hour written paper, comprising two sections: A and B. The first contains aural based questions on the set works with a short melodic/rhythmic dictation exercise. The second section consists of two essay questions, with essay one asking students to draw links from their study of the set works to the music heard in an unfamiliar extract and essay two giving a choice of three questions that will ask them to evaluate the musical elements, context, and language of one set work. • Six Areas of Study with three set works in each • One written paper of 2 hours • Section A: Areas of study and dictation • Section B: Two essay questions • Essay one asks students to draw links from their study of the set works to the music heard as an unfamiliar extract. • Essay two gives a choice of three questions that ask students to evaluate the musical elements, context, and language of one set work.
