Course summary

Well, it’s Mathematics. But it’s real, powerful, and complex Mathematics. It’s the stuff that was at the back end of the GCSE paper that lots of people ignored and still did well overall. Only now, we can’t ignore it— it’s our starting point. You’ll learn new theorems, delve into the world of calculus, learn new techniques for problem-solving, but most importantly, develop a true love for Mathematics and hopefully begin to see its beauty (seriously). The course content is split into three main sections: Pure Mathematics, Statistics, and Mechanics. In the Pure section, there will be some familiar content to begin with, index laws, surds, quadratic equations, graph sketching, and transformations which should all be familiar from your GCSE studies; but then we will meet arithmetic and geometric sequences, and series, differential and integral calculus, factor theorems and their application to higher order polynomials, exponentials and logarithms, radians and more calculus. In the second year calculus, in particular, will become a dominant theme with a significant expansion of the types of functions you will learn to manipulate and analyze using this vital mathematical technique. Statistics will again be familiar initially as we deal with averages and measures of spread, but we will quickly move to hypothesis testing using binomial and normal distributions and delve into where evidence becomes convincing with null and alternate hypotheses, critical regions and values, and levels of significance. Mechanics deals with Newton’s Equations of Motion and how we apply them in one two and three dimensions. You’ll learn about how forces act on bodies and affect their motion, and build your equation-solving skills at the same time.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE 9-5, including Math and English Your Maths grade must be a minimum of Grade 7.

How you'll be assessed
