Course summary

Studying A Level Art and Design will help you to develop intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive skills. You will have the opportunity to investigate, experiment, develop practical skills as well as aesthetic understanding and critical judgement. Yet more valuable than anything, you will enjoy opportunities to develop independence of mind, explore your own ideas, refine your skills and produce personal outcomes You will look at the ways other artists and designers have worked to enhance your own artwork. You will keep sketchbooks to assist in the recording and developing of your own ideas. You will also learn various ways of presenting your work for display. As you progress through the A Level course and learn more advanced skills, you will be encouraged to find ways of developing your own personal style and interests and therefore will enable you to work to your strengths in painting, printmaking, drawing, mixed media and photography.

Entry requirements

• GCSE English Language or English Literature at Grade 4 or above or GCSE Mathematics at Grade 4 or above. Fives or more subjects in total at Grade 4 or above (this includes BTECs). • 5 in English and Maths, 5 passes at GCSE Level.

How you'll be assessed

Unit 1: Self generated unit of work. For the A Level Art and Design course, you will be expected to work independently, with the support of the Art Department. Your work can be based on either an issue, an interest, an artist or a genre of art. You will be expected to keep a work book/journal to document your research and developments and produce a portfolio of completed art work. You are also expected to write a short essay. Unit 2: Externally set assignment. Year 12 and 13 course content: non-exam assessment 40% is allocated to tasks set by examination boards completed in a specified time. Component 1 - Personal Investigation 60% Component 2- Externally set assignment 40%
