These courses encourage a broad approach to the subject, which allows candidates to develop a sound grounding in a number of areas while still exploring the subject in depth and is intended to build on the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired by candidates taking Art at GCSE. Students can follow a broad Fine Art Course or specialise in Graphic Communication, and Photography or take a general Art and Design option course at both AS and A2 level. Component 1- Personal investigation Students are required to conduct a practical investigation into an idea, issue, concept or theme, supported by written material. The investigation must show clear development from initial intentions to final outcome(s). Component 2- Externally set assignment The question paper will consist of a choice of eight questions to be used as a starting point. Students are required to select one.
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above or equivalent. It is expected that all candidates will have gained a minimum of Grade 5 at GCSE in Art and Design in their chosen specialist area.
