Course summary

English Literature at A-Level is far more personal than at GCSE. The course is rigorous, stimulating and challenging. If you’re interested in exploring some of the most problematic aspects of our society – such as: sexuality, fear, conflict, class divide, gender divide, religion, politics– as well as a desire to explore who you are, and your own opinions on these matters then you should be studying A-Level Literature. Furthermore, A-Level Literature is an opportunity for you to develop sophisticated skills that will help you in any future career. You will work on developing mature, logical arguments rooted in textual evidence and critical theory in order to support a personal argument. However, the main reason you should study English Literature at Kineton is because you are passionate about Literature, discussion and argument. You would enjoy being able to drive debates forward and relish the opportunity to participate in small group discussions. You should study English Literature because you are interested in the world around you, and your place within it.

How you'll be assessed

Paper 1: Shakespeare / Drama and Poetry pre-1900 = Hamlet (Shakespeare), A Doll’s House (Ibsen) and Maude (Tennyson). Assessed by written exam. 60 marks (40%) 2 hrs and 30 mins. Paper 2: Close reading in chosen topic / comparative and contextual study from chosen topic. The Handmaid’s Tale (Atwood) nad 1984 (Orwell) Assessed by written exam 60 marks (40%) 2 hrs 30 mins NEA: Recreative writing piece with commentary / comparative essay. Assessed as coursework 30 marks (20%).
