Course summary

A level Chemistry is for those students who wish to continue to study after GCSE. In the first year, students explore the fundamental principles that form the basis of chemistry such as atomic structure, bonding, periodicity and an introduction to organic chemistry. In the second year, students will develop further principles and concepts such as equilibria, polymers, aromatic chemistry, thermodynamics, energetics and organic chemistry. There will be teacher led sessions, class-based discussion and individual research. You will need to undertake private study, read around the subject and complete regular homework tasks to stay on track.

Entry requirements

Grade 6/6 in combined science or a grade 6 or above in GCSE Chemistry. We also require a Grade 6 or above in GCSE maths. To apply for Nether Stowe Sixth Form students require a Grade 4 or above in at least 5 GCSE’s or equivalent qualifications, including either English (Language or Literature) or Maths.

How you'll be assessed

3 written exams at the end of a 2-year course. (35%, 35% and 30%). Approximately 15% of the total marks will be for practical knowledge and understanding. Students will also need to complete a minimum of twelve practical’s set by the exam board.
