Course summary

This course follows on from GCSE Design and Technology and will help you develop a deeper understanding of how products are designed and manufactured in the real world. You will learn about contemporary technologies, materials and processes, as well as established practices. This new qualification places greater emphasis on understanding and applying iterative design processes. You will use your creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes that solve real and relevant problems, considering your own and others’ needs, wants and values. This creative qualification gives students the practical skills, theoretical knowledge and confidence to succeed in a number of careers. Especially those in the creative industries. You will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on design and technology, whilst enjoying opportunities to put your learning in to practice by producing prototypes of your choice. You will gain a real understanding of what it means to be a designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers.

Grade 5 at GCSE Design & Technology

How you'll be assessed

Two exams and one NEA (Non-examined Assessment) Paper One – Technical Principles 2 hours 30 minutes (30%) Paper Two – Designing and Making Principles 1 hour 30 minutes (20%) NEA – A substantial ‘Design and Make’ project including a design portfolio approximately 45 pages and made prototype. (50%) - Students choose their own context which could lead to a graphics or resistant materials based outcome.
