Design and Technology offers a unique opportunity in the curriculum for learners to identify and solve real problems by designing and making products or systems. Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. This specification encourages learners to use creativity and imagination when applying iterative design processes to develop and modify designs, and to design and make prototypes that solve real world problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants, aspirations and values.
GCSE 6 in Design and Technology with 5 in Maths Standard requirements - 5 x level 2 qualifications: GCSEs at level 4 or above or BTECs at a pass or above, including at least grade 4 in English and Mathematics.
Component 1 Examination (50% of overall A Level) Learners take a single examination in Design and Technology: product design. The examination includes a mix of structured and extended writing questions assessing learners' knowledge and understanding of: • technical principles • designing and making principles • wider issues in design and technology Component 2 Design and Make NEA (50% of overall A Level) A design and make project, based on a brief developed by the candidate, assessing the candidate's ability to: • identify, investigate and outline design possibilities • design and make prototypes • analyse and evaluate design decisions and outcomes, including for prototypes made by themselves and others
