Sociology is simply the study of people and society. It looks at social groups and how they interact with each other and behave, as well as how 'forces' of society can influence and change people's behaviour. Some of the questions that Sociology asks are: Why are things like they are? What makes us who we are? What is identity? What is a Family, and why do we have them? How is the media so successful at shaping our behaviour and making us react to it in the way that we do? Why do people commit crime? Why are young black males more likely to be stopped by the Police than young white males? What is crime? What is classed as a deviant act? Why does prison not deter all people from reoffending? Why do some countries still enforce capital punishment? These are only a few of the questions that we study. Sociology lessons are very focussed on class discussions, and the sharing of views and opinions, whilst linking these to relevant Sociological theories. Students will be expected to take part in debates, group work, prepare presentations and present to other class members, conduct individual research, prepare for lessons by completing individual learning tasks set, and to be able to use literacy and grammar appropriately. Prospective students must be aware that this is a text heavy subject with regular essay writing. Although this subject will require all units (both AS and A2) to be assessed at the end of Year 13, it is our intention for students to take the stand alone AS qualification at the end of Year 12.
5 GCSEs at 4 or above. A demonstration of relevant skills at GCSE.
AS 1 Year course: Unit 1- Education with Methods in Context Unit 2 - Research Methods and Topics in Sociology: Families and Households All students will sit the AS-Level course exams at the end of the year. A-Level Full 2-year course: Unit 1- Education with Methods in Context Unit 2 - Research Methods and Topics in Sociology: Families and Households, Media Unit 3 - Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods All students will sit all Full A-Level course exams at the end of year two.
