Course summary

The BTEC Level 3 National in Applied Science provides education and training for current and future applied science employees and gives an opportunity to achieve a nationally recognised Level 3 vocational qualification. It paves the way to entering employment in the applied science sector or to progressing to other vocational qualifications, and allows you to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life. Year 12 Unit 1 Principles and Applications of Science – externally examined Unit 2 Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques – assessed via assignments Year 13 Unit 3 Science Investigation Techniques –based on practical skills Unit 8 Physiology of Human Body Systems – assessed via assignments.

Entry requirements

- The minimum general requirements for Sixth Form entry are a minimum of 5 GCSE Grade 4s including English and Maths. - Grade 4 in Combined Science, or Grade 4 in all three separate sciences

How you'll be assessed

You will be assessed through a series of assignments for Unit 2 in Year 12 and the optional unit in Year 13. You will need to take responsibility for your own learning and achievement, taking into account industry standards for behaviour and performance. Within every assignment you will be given the opportunity to achieve at Pass, Merit and Distinction level. Unit 1 is made up of 3 x 40 minute externally set exams that will cover material from Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Unit 3 is an externally set task based on practical work. You will research the topic, plan and carry out experiments, analyse and evaluate data. Both Unit 1 and 3 are marked by the exam board.
