Course summary

By studying the A level course you will improve your knowledge of the contemporary culture and language of French speaking countries. You will develop your ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken French. You will develop your linguistic skills - listening, reading, speaking and writing. You will improve your ability to analyse and discuss modern day issues and to present a coherent and persuasive argument. You will be encouraged to play an active part in lessons. All four skill areas - listening, speaking, reading and writing - will be developed. In addition to the timetabled lessons, you will spend one hour per week with the French Assistant. ICT and visits abroad will give you the opportunity to enjoy direct contact with French-speaking people and French culture.

Entry requirements

French at grade 6 and English at grade 5

How you'll be assessed

You will be assessed in all skill areas - listening, speaking, reading and writing as follows: Paper 1 – Listening, Reading and Writing (translation from the target language into English) Paper 2 – Translation from English into the target language and writing about a film or literary text. Paper 3 – Speaking – Independent research task and general discussion.
