By studying the A level course you will improve your knowledge of the contemporary culture and language of German speaking countries. You will develop your ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken German. You will develop your linguistic skills - listening, reading, speaking and writing. You will improve your ability to analyse and discuss modern day issues and to present a coherent and persuasive argument. You will be encouraged to play an active part in lessons. All four skill areas - listening, speaking, reading and writing - will be developed. In addition to the timetabled lessons, you will spend one hour per week with the German Assistant. ICT and visits abroad will give you the opportunity to enjoy direct contact with German-speaking people and German culture. At A level, students will be expected to take an active part in lessons. You will develop your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing through analysis and discussion of modern day issues, a visit abroad and ICT facilities in the Languages ICT suite. You will also have lessons with a Foreign Language Assistant. During the course students will investigate topics in countries where the target language is spoken. Topics covered include: • Social issues and trends • Artistic culture • Immigration and multicultural society • Aspects of political and historical life.
German at grade 6 and English at grade 5
You will be assessed in all skill areas - listening, speaking, reading and writing as follows: Paper 1 – Listening, Reading and Writing (translation from the target language into English) Paper 2 – Translation from English into the target language and writing about a film or literary text. Paper 3 – Speaking – Independent research task and general discussion.
